News Flash! It's about the quality of life stupid!

Earlier in the week, an email meme from an unnamed blogger among a group of bloggers we all hang out with noted that the Chronicle editorial board seems to have a hang-up about Houston and how it compares to "world class" cities like NYC. He noted the following line in this story by Mike Tolson about traffic congestion:
What the city lacks in charm, scenery and sites of historical interest, it makes up in hours spent behind the wheel.

And he asked us if we had noted how the Chronicle was so down on the city itself. We all replied that yes, we've noted that for quite some time, and that it was a sort of running joke among us. The endless quest for the Editorial board to turn Houston into NYC or some "world class" semblance of same.

Well, not everybody thinks that is such a good idea.... (language warning)

Ok, so it is the satire site "The Onion", but satire is only effective when there is a germ of truth to it. I'd submit that there is more than a little truth to be found here.

I know this is very off topic but I had to respond to a post you made last year.Illegitimacy, Politics, and Crime. The Unintentional Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Yes I think there is to much illegitimacy now but do you seriously want to return to the days when pregnant girls were shipped off? Go to google books and Type in The Girls Who Went Away.

You should have posted this comment there, not here. I'll allow it this time.

There IS another alternative. They could not be having sex (preferred), or being more proactive about birth control. The welfare system is set up to essentially PAY these girls to have sex and have kids. And it rewards the boys who father them by actually penalizing them if they try to take responsibility for the child. so what you end up with in very short order is girls who don't care if they get pregnant because they'll just get more money from uncle sugar if they do, and boys who revel in their ability to father unwanted children. That which you pay for you get more of, that which you don't you get less of. The economics are backwards.

Dude, if the Chron thinks traffic is bad here, their board should travel up to Seattle and Portland. Holy crap, I sat in two 6 mile plus jams last week.

The guy behind the desk in Portland said it was normal because they build bike trails, not roads.

Man, was I happy to see the six lanes on Hwy 59 when I got home.
