Interesting Bedfellows (updated)

There is a blog by the name of Richard Carpenter Watch. The operators of that blog and myself have crossed paths before. Their view Of Dr. Carpenter is a bit dimmer than mine, but be that as it may, they find themselves in a position that I would be surprised if Red Ink: Texas was not in as well. (I will be checking this and will get back to you.) It would appear that the college district has blocked access to that website from the publicly available computers in the library of the campus. A lawsuit has been filed arguing that such blocking constitutes a violation of the first amendment. I would agree that this is not the proper actions of a publicly funded college district. While I disagree strongly with some of the statements of the publishers of that blog, I steadfastly support their right to make those statements. We both would appear to have the best interests of NHMCCD at heart, even if we do disagree how to arrive at that result or what that result should in fact be.

UPDATE: Via one of my friends on the faculty I have learned that Red Ink: Texas is NOT on the banned list as I feared it might be. Additionally, the Houston Chronicle weighs in as well

I hope you do check it out, and double check that the carpenterwatch blog is indeed inaccessable. There seems to be some question about that, though if CSN has blocked the blog, chances are good that NHMCCD has too.

It seems to me, Rorschah, that the District likes double standards. I absolutely can't wait until they come back to the voters for another bond referendum. I'll fight them tooth and nail to get it voted down AGAIN!

They make me sick to my stomach. And I don't care WHO the hell is running the show up at the headquarters - I'll never support that damn district. NEVER, EVER, NEVER. And that's a looooong time!

Filthy, lying ba**ards.

Did you know this? The college district will pay $1.5 million to Creative Marketing Services for a new logo and a public awareness campaign for its new name.

Hold on a minute!

The Library is funded by Harris County!

If the computers are in the library, they should be exempt from the Cy-Fair College control.

Royko, If that is the case it is news to me. Back when I was a student, you had to have a student ID to check stuff out, not a Harris County Library card. Maybe things have changed since then, but I don't think so.

Rorschach, Thank you for a fair report on the blocking of the CSN Richard Carpenter Watch Blog. You might fall out of the favor of Richard Carpenter. But it is better that you disassociate yourself from the dictator so you don't discredit your hard-built blog.

Anon, let me be perfectly clear. My position on Dr. Carpenter is that he appeared to be better than the other two candidates, which honestly was not saying a whole lot. Whether he will work out to be good for NHMCCD or not is yet to be demonstrated. I am taking a hopeful, but watchful, neutral position on him.

There are a LOT of rice bowls at NHMCCD that need to be broken and a lot of incestuous relationships that have left us with the bureaucratic equivalent of hemophilia. The taxpayers and the students are being bled to death. This must stop. If Dr. Carpenter will not do that, I will work to find someone who will. There are too many levels of Administrators and administration pay is far and away out of touch with reality outside the hallowed halls of higher education. NHMCCD needs a good dose of reality injected, and when that happens there are going to be a lot of administrators kicking cans. This is a good thing.

Royko, I think I have found the root of our misunderstanding concerning NHMCCD library vs Harris County library. At the Cy-Fair campus, Harris County's Library and the Campus library are co-located. and yes the site would appear to be available on Harris County's system which is separate from NHMCCD's. This is not the case at other campuses.
