NHMCCD Board makes the right choice

Last night, on a vote of 6-3, the NHMCCD board voted to select Dr. Richard Carpenter as the next Chancellor to replace John Pickelman. It is my understanding that the back room discussions that took place prior to the board convening in open session late last night were extremely contentious, bordering on "knock down, drag out". Red Ink: Texas applauds this decision, but the job is not finished yet. Dr. Carpenter is an extremely competent leader and as such he was recently given very high marks by his current institution, along with a sizable raise. As a result, the incentive for Dr. Carpenter to come to Houston is no longer there. The salary he was initially offered is $40,000 less than his current pay in Las Vegas. Now given the respective cost of living in the two cities, $40,000 might not go as far in Vegas as it would in Houston, so the actual value of the difference may be something to consider. So far, no negotiations have taken place, and in fact as of last night at around 10:30 PM Houston time, nobody from NHMCCD had contacted Dr. Carpenter to even inform him that he had been selected. The difference is around 5-7% of the total compensation package so there is clearly room for negotiation. Let us hope that NHMCCD bargains in good faith and is not doing this for appearance sake so that when Dr. Carpenter rejects a lowball offer they can say they tried and then go about selecting either Steve Head or Diane Troyer as likely originally planned.

Well - if Dr. Carpenter doesn't accept the transfer, and NHMCCD goes ahead and puts Head or Troyer in place - I hope the board realizes that it will continue to be an up-hill battle for them to get a bond referendum passed without them invoking "emergency bonds" on bogus expenditures, like a totally unnecessary satellite center for the Kingwood College.

What a bunch of garbage that is! How does that constitute an EMERGENCY???????

That is more fodder for investigation!!!!

Do we know who the three were who poo-pooed Carpenter as Pickelman's replacement? I'd love to know!

Is this a smoke screen, since an article in the LV Sun shows something hard to compete with:

That is definitely a high standard to compare Troyer or Head (or even Pickelman) against isn't it?
I'd say NHMCCD would be damned lucky to get him if they could. Lord knows that pool needs some chlorine.

Consider that the college paid something like $65K to Barringer to do the "search" and out of that search they only got two names. The other two were already angling for the job. For one thing, paying 65K for two names seems awful inappropriate, and second, if they fail to reach an agreement then the search would really need to start anew. Since that would mean another $65K down a rathole, wouldn't it make more sense to put a decent chunk of that money on top of the current offer and be done with it?

Is Houston Plagued by EXCELLENT talent? Seems that every time we get a good coach, or team players we either can them before they get here or trip going to the alter.

Look currently at the Houston Rockets, the winningest coach ever in a non protracted season and they want to dump him.

I hope that now the few thinking board will carry through with their wise decision and complete the job of hiring a truly outstanding educator and place some new blood here!
