Open letter the the Harris County GOP leadership in regards to Chuck Rosenthal

Gentlemen (and Lady),

It has come to my attention that Judge Lykos is being discussed as an alternative to Rosenthal as HCGOP candidate for HCDA, as is Mr. Leitner and three other candidates that I do not know the names of. While I am not at all impressed with Mr Leitner, Judge Lykos would be an excellent choice. I would strongly encourage the executive committee to encourage both/all to file for the position. This will give the party Rank and File a chance to chose for ourselves who the best to serve as our next District Attorney. At a bare minimum, DA Rosenthal has misused county property and engaged in nepotism in hiring his former (current? That still remains to be seen.) lover as his executive assistant and has given her perks to which the office she holds is not entitled to. Of all people, our own District Attorney cannot hold himself as being above the law. He must be made an example of or the county and the HCGOP's reputation will be in the sewer. Given the Democratic opponent's linkage to the crime lab scandal as well as the former Brown administration, he cannot be allowed to run without a viable GOP opponent. Rosenthal is no longer viable. We MUST have another qualified candidate. If some or all of them file to run, then we have three months to sort out who the party should get behind, that is not a LOT of time but it is certainly better than doing nothing. Today as you all are well aware is the filing deadline. We cannot let today pass without another candidate being on the ballot.

DO NOT DISCOURAGE ANYONE from filing. It is within every man's ability to do nothing, to do SOMETHING requires courage. I beg you all to have some courage.

I am saddened that the family of Chuck Rosenthal is hurting.
I am not sad for Chuck Rosenthal.. He has misused and abused his power and office and has lost the trust of most of Harris County. Time to move on Chuck..
I don't like reading about "this is his personal business" and "how much good he has done for our county". We pay his salary!!! He is/was a public servant...

I get tired of these Judges and DAs forgetting who is paying them...They all act like they are better and above us common folk..
The court is a place for justice..When you are dealing with someone's life and family.. be fair and listen. Be concerned for both parties.
My family was hurt and humiliated in the criminal courts of Harris County by a arrogant and unprofessonal DA and a lack luster Judge, who was busy looking on EBAY on the computer (during the hearing..) There's your dollars at work folks..

We need a shake up in the Harris County Court System..
We deserve better and we can make it better .. Lets start with Chuck.

Great post Rorschach! Will they listen? How much knowledge do you have of the local republican party? I'm not knowledgeable, but not impressed with things as they are.

AW, I would not say I am an expert. There is a lot of "inside baseball" that goes on but that is true of just about any political organism. I know (to say hello) many of the major players, but I don't know them personally. It's not as if Jared Woodfill and I hang out and drink beers together or anything like that. I don't know who may have gotten drunk and insulted who's wife at a Christmas party or anything like that if that is what you are asking. Machiavelli would feel right at home in any political party in this day in age.

I am not sure what difference it makes whether she smokes or not. I really fail to see the relevance of that. As personal vices go, that is not anywhere near the worst you could have.

It is certainly your prerogative to think she is arrogant or a "biotch". I will say that is a common personality trait for female lawyers, of which I have met quite a few. For that matter, it is a common personality trait for lawyers in general. I really fail to see how that is a detriment to serving as a DA. I WANT someone that is aggressive and adversarial in that job.

Apparently "anonymous (1/3/08) who believes Lykos is a chaine smoking arrogant biotch" is not alone in his/her estimation of the candidate:

This should be an interesting race to follow!

I have ONE question. Where's the independant candidate?

Ride I'd almost bet money that Anon and CAD1936 are one in the same person.

As to the Independent candidate issue. Independent candidates rarely if ever win elections except under very narrow and odd circumstances. Lieberman being one that comes to mind off the top of my head. Part of the reason is that by affiliating with a party, you are seen as adopting the party platform and ideals as well. That acts like a mental shorthand for voters so that they don't feel like they have to listen and read everything you say and do to get a feel for what kind of person you are. I'm not saying that the image is always all that accurate, often it is not, but it exists nevertheless. Independents are harder to pidgeonhole and as a result voters tend to ignore them because they are hard for the voter to wrap their heads around. Right wrong or indifferent these are the subconscious thought patterns of the average voter. I don't see them changing any time soon. Voters are lazy. Hell we can barely get a small fraction of eligible voters to even bother voting as it is. If you force them to think and do research, you'll lose what few voters you had.

I'm not so sure that CAD1936 is the same post-person, but whoever it is is not alone in their sentiments. Personally, I never even heard of Lykos until recently. I'm an ill-informed voter, exactly the type you described above, who has stood outside of politics for years - for many of the reasons you stated.

We are overwhelmed with mind-numbing rhetoric that doesn't mean crap, and after a while, one has a tendency to just turn out and turn them off.

I received my "new" voter's registration card in the mail today. Perhaps I'll even use it!

I always get great insights here, Rorsch.

Thanks.

Rorschach,

I'm coming to this party a little late, but my understanding is that Judge Lykos isn't a trial lawyer. I was told by another criminal district judge (feelings against Judge Lykos run pretty strong among the [Republican] criminal court judges) that she had gone from the police department to the bench, without an intervening stint practicing law on either side of the courtroom. She has apparently never tried a case as either a prosecutor or a defender.

I am investigating to determine whether that is correct; if it is, it could be important.
